Before we had bought our first house we started our corporation and called to ask the city if we need a business license. We spoke to several people, explained what we were doing, and were told several times that we absolutely did not need a business license.

A few months ago we started putting door hangers out. On the third day the city called and informed us that it was illegal to go door to door putting out flyers. BTW, this was a call from the city and not a prank. They informed us that we “must have a business license if you’re working as a company.” Again, we explained to them what we were doing, how we operated under a corporation (although there are just two of us), and this woman said that we did, in fact, need a business license.

She said we should have talked to her to begin with and she doesn’t know who could have “misinformed” us. We asked her what kind of license we needed and she said to just come down and talk to her, as she would figure it out. After a few suggestions on this board, though, we have forgotten about the business license problem all together.

The point? We are sending out a few press releases to get extra exposure and do not want to be bombarded again with questions about why we don’t have a business license, which are getting harder and harder to answer. Why don’t we just go down and sign up for the business license? We are willing to but would like to know the pros and cons of having a business license. Any thoughts? Guidance? Similar situations? We could really use some help on this one.

We also don’t have a lawyer to whom we can refer any of these overbearing people.
Thanks everyone,
Al

Al,

I don't know of any cons to having a busines license except that it cost $$$$. The amount varies from city to city, but if it is a small amount and it keeps them off your back then just go get one. Maybe you will sleep better at night.

Lynn

Those who say it can't be done are usually interrupted by others doing it!

Lynn,

Thanks for the reply. We went ahead and got a license. Of course, once Al went down there, they still said that we didn't need one. After going through a few people, he found the original woman who had called to complain about our illegal activities (ooooh, hanging door hangers ). She said that although she still wasn't entirely sure if we really did need one, she wanted us to have one anyway.

Basically, we figured that a needless license was better than no license (just in case), and that turned out to be her logic, as well. One less thing to wonder about.
