Fear and Goals

The big question I have been thinking about over the past couple of weeks, is where do I envision myself 5 years from now, and what do I have to do to get there?  Yes, as you can imagine I do have some goals written down, but never had the time to really envision where I will be, what I will own, exactly what I will be doing and most importantly- How to get there, until recently.  Have you had the opportunity to spend a great deal of time thinking about this?  Do you have your map lined out?  If you have, kudos for you!  If not, time to create the Master Plan!

From what I am finding out by talking to people, is that they have in their mind where they want to be and what they want to be doing, but have not spent the time to think about what they need to do to get there.  So many people I talk to have regrets in life that they didn’t do this or that when they were younger or had the opportunity to do so.  Why didn’t they do it?  My guess is they just assumed that they’ll get around to it and they’ll have time down the road.  Time is what we’re fighting here!  Develop your plan, aim high and do what ever it takes to reach your goals.

Another topic I have been spending a great deal of time thinking about is FEAR.  It amazes me how many people let fear control them.  This business has really opened my eyes to the fears people have as a whole, not specifically in this business.  I have talked to friends, family and even strangers about their fears and why are they holding back from something that they really want to do.  In a couple of cases I have been successful in helping them down off of the fence!  It was hard work! Anyway, whether it’s cold calling ads in newspapers, moving to a new state, talking to people, failing, or even applying for a new job, so many people let fear control their lives and they don’t even realize it!

I know there has been 10 or 20 posts written with Fear being the topic, but this is one of the most important subjects and will make you or break you in this or any other business.  Take a look around you.  Almost EVERYONE is playing it safe.  There’s an Elite group out there that have conquered their fears that are making fortunes and have become successful. What do they know that most others don’t?  Well, I have not conducted any fancy survey or anything, but based on my conversations with people and what I see, biggest things that most people fear are:

1.  Change
2.  The Unknown
3.  Failure
4.  The Fear of Not Looking Good.  (Thanks George)

I think it’s important to evaluate yourself and see what’s holding you back.  You may not even realize that fear has its grip on you until it’s too late.  You may feel like you are going full steam ahead and doing all of the right things, but is what you’re doing right now going to impact and set the stage for you to accomplish what you want next week, next year or in 5 years?  Are you doing everything you can do right now to destroy the hidden fears we all have inside of us?

Try to find ways to get yourself out of your comfort zone.  If you fear public speaking, attend Realtor meetings and speak for a few minutes letting them know that you’re an investor in the area and what you’re looking for, and also attend some local lead exchange group meetings.  Walk down the street and hand out business cards telling people that you will pay them $500.00 for a lead that you end up purchasing.  Many people fear getting up in front of people. If you’re one of them, start off slowly and talk to one, then two people and so on.  Soon, you will have the confidence to speak to a room full of people.

Now, I bet some of you are wondering what all of this has to do with Real Estate Investing.  It’s the fear that holds us back from going to the neighbor’s house that’s next to a vacant property to find out what the story is.  It’s the fear of failure that makes some people not take action and continue to sit on the fence and read about how to invest in Real Estate.  It’s so much easier to read about how to do it, rather than just getting out there and do it.  We all need a push and some guidance every once in a while and that’s what the Cafe is for.  Yes, you can learn about how to invest in Real Estate, how to rehab properties and about corporations or taxes, but all of this information is worthless to you unless you’re willing to push yourself to make all of this part of your life.

So what are your next steps?  Have you developed a Master Plan that outlines what you need to do to reach your goals?  How many houses do you need to purchase or flip within the next 6 months, 2 years or 5 years in able to reach your goals?

By sticking to this business, you know by now that none of us will get rich quick by investing in Real Estate. What we do know is that it takes time, so learn to be a little patient.  Sticking with it will allow us to reach the freedom that we are all after.  It just goes to show how important setting goals, writing a business plan and destroying your fears really are.  You may be adding years or decades to your efforts if you haven’t defined to yourself where you’re going and when you want to get there.

Take some time and do some thinking about your fears and goals.  Write down what comes to mind and work on your master plan.  Until next time, TMO
